Tree Work Explained
*This mature sycamore had a 40% crown reduction, because it posed a risk falling onto the owners house. Read more about it in our blog
Removals
Trees are amazing, let's get that straight. In fact, we need more of them, not less! We'll always explore options to retain your tree - it might suit both you and the tree better to have it pruned. But Clarke Tree Works can be trusted to remove even the biggest tree in the smallest space. We work professionally and safely to take it down in segments. We can then either take all wood off-site or process it for you into fire wood. As experienced climbers we'll take on any challenge, rain or shine.
Pruning

Crown Reductions (see pic): This process usually involves reducing the overall size of the canopy. Imagine the silhouette of your tree and then shrink it. We often reduce it by 10 - 40%. The tree will continue to be healthy while you can enjoy a bit more light. Or if your tree poses a fell-risk, then reducing the crown can mitigate that by lessening the sail effect (its ability to catch wind and potentially topple).
Crown Lifts: A crown lift is a simple prune whereby the lower branches, forming the lowest tier of the canopy, are removed. Crown lifts can be quick way to realise more ambient light in your garden. It can likewise be a simple solution to remove obstructive branches over paths and driveways, or off gutters/roofs.

Pollarding: We often see this process used in tree-lined streets in towns and cities all over the world. In principle the pollarding technique is to remove the entire crown back to the very basic trunk and primary boughs. Usually something we do to older trees, the tree remains a mature tree after pollarding, but the foliage bearing branches begin growing afresh. A pollarded tree will send out hundreds of sprouts, which create a canopy over time. Pollarding can be repeated at intervals ranging from 5 - 20 years. Species such as Willow, Lime, Plane, Hazel, Ash can respond excellently to being pollarded.

Thinning: Sometimes a tree's crown grows too dense. Tangled, dark and prone to disease, such trees can benefit from thinning out selected branches in order to open up the canopy - allowing more light through, creating a more pleasant looking tree and sometimes preventing the onset of disease.
